Love is a feeling that one can not experience only at its half or partially. You have to live it at its fullest with everything it brings: hope, desire, passion, deceit, joy, fulfillment. If we try to track back in time the feeling we find it most well depicted by Sappho in her “Love Songs of Sappho” known to belong to the 630 B.C. The lines of her poems are filled with the emotional yearning and the desire that even today are able to move our inner senses.
The 11th century discovers the troubadours that had attempted and succeeded to write love songs of a long-lasting beauty and sincerity. Their music together with the lyrics were transmitted orally from one generation to another, love songs inspired from their own experiences putting themselves at risk writing on those times about physical and romantic attraction. If we think about how strict the rules of the Church were in those early medieval times we see a lot of troubadours being blamed of heresy.
It was later in the 15th century that music began to be spread throughout Europe, especially that music promoted by the earlier troubadours and since the Renaissance started to bring new concepts in art, literature, philosophy, church lost step by step a little form its power. In this way the notion of courtly love was celebrated in the cultures of different countries. The custom for the music to be present at different social events has been preserved till our times and wedding is known to be the most musical event out of the entire range of social events.
Love songs + wedding are two things that go hand in hand perfectly. A wedding celebration can not exist without love songs, be they performed at church or merely at the wedding reception. They have to be present as they reflect the feeling that have brought from the beginning the couple into the decision to join together as husband and wife for the rest of their lives. At a wedding celebration couples are free to choose among a variety of love songs that they find the best to match their style of wedding and most important to reflect their deepest feelings they have inside for each other. In this way they can make their wedding a festivity of love and commitment they swear to keep alive throughout their marriage.
Love songs for modern weddings can be divided in different categories, wedding couples needing the one to adjust the best their wedding event. So we can have this classification: classic love songs, popular love songs, extra ‘cheesy’ love songs and love songs of all times. Of course that this list may be extended to that of alternative love songs + wedding, this depending strictly on the theme of the wedding and how every couple feel to express themselves in this matter.
