Macedonian Wedding Songs




It isn’t new the fact that every ethnical wedding has its own charm given by its unique customs and traditions. If you future spouse has Macedonian origins, then be sure to take into consideration some Macedonian wedding customs and music to make him feel like home.

Macedonians are a Balkan people. Keep in mind that Macedonians have some of the best parties with many crazy and funny traditions and a lot of dancing. Macedonian wedding is a three-day feast with much singing, eating and drinking. There are many separate rituals specific for the bride and groom. Almost each ritual is accompanied by a specific song.





For example, in the morning of the wedding at the groom’s house, a live band creates a joyous atmosphere by welcoming the guests as they arrive and family and relatives are dancing in the street before entering the house where they are received with plenty of food and drinks as part of the wedding celebration.

Every friend and relative is involved into the wedding preparations. A traditional custom is to prepare baked bread with plenty of salt and lolly bears. The stick which is used to mix the dough is ornate with a couple of rings. The stick is to be hold by a boy. In the end, bread is broken and shared at lunch.

Before going to the bride’s house, the groom is shaved in preparation for his wedding. The shaving is accompanied by several traditional songs. The shaving is symbolising the separation of the boy from his parents. During this time, at her house, the bride is being dressed for wedding by her bridesmaid and then she has to go and take water from three different fountains. When the groom is about to leave the house, a glass of water is kicked over the front door.

If you are a bride to be, don’t forget to look through a ring to see your groom coming to take you to church. If you succeed on seeing him through a ring this means that you will be happy and have nice and healthy children together.

When the bride arrives at the church, she gives her groom a towel and ties a ribbon on his arm. Towards the end of the service, the newlyweds are wrapped in a shoal, holding hands and focusing on the priest’s words.

Zete mili zete or Dear brother-in-law

Prsten mi panda Neso or My ring fell, Neso

Gavranovo pile or The raven’s brood

  1. Here in Serbia we also have nice, old, traditional wedding songs. It is a custom to sing this kind of songs during ceremony although no one is wearing traditional clothes like in the second picture you have showen
