Popular 1989 Songs For Your Wedding




1989 represented the beginnings of the Post-Cold War period. Music played an important role because famous artists of the time such as Bon Jovi, Skid Row, the Scorpions or Ozzy Osborne were part of the Moscow Music Peace Festival which promoted international fighting against drugs in the Soviet Union and showed that 1989 was the representative year for hard rock.

I’ll Be There for You by Bon Jovi

This song was written by Jon Bon Jovi and Richie Sambora. It is a power ballad that was their third single from the album called New Jersey, which reached No. 1 on Billboard Hot 100.

So Alive by Love and Rockets

This is a song featured on Love and Rockets self entitled-album that reached number 3 on the American singles chart and number 1 on the U.S. Mainstream Rock chart.

Here Comes Your Man by Pixies

This is a song written by Black Francis when his was 15 years old. Black Francis explained on an interview that the song is “about winos and hobos traveling on the trains who die in the California Earthquake. Before earthquakes everything gets very calm, animals stop talking and birds stop singing.

Free Fallin’ by Tom Petty

This song spent 33 weeks on the top of the Billboard Album Rock Tracks and reached no. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100. The hit has been covered by numerous artists, among which John Mayer, whose accoustic version  was recorded on his 2008 live album Where the Light Is.

One by Metallica

The idea of the song was based on the 1938 anti-war book Johnny’s Got His Gun, about a soldier struggling to communicate after a bad bombing accident. The song was featured on Metallica’s And Justice for All album and for its music video included some clips from the film which was also based on the book. In 1990 the song won the Grammy for the Best Metal Performance.

Patience by Guns N’ Roses

This song is accompanied by three acoustic guitars and reached no. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. The music and lyrics of this single were written by the rhythm guitarist Izzy Stradlin.

All I Want Is You by U2

All I Want Is You was the fourth single from U2 album Rattle and Hum. It was also featured on the Reality Bites soundtrack and in 1994 reached no. 38 in the US Top 40 Mainstream charts.

Love Song by The Cure

This is a song with a lot of covers, but the original was The Cure’s third single from their album Disintegration. This 1989 song was the most successful single in the U.S. and reached No. 2 in the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

18 and Life by Skid Row

This is a power ballad written by the bass player Rachel Bolan and the guitarist Dave Sabo, after Dave read a newspaper article telling about an 18 year old boy sentenced to life imprisonment for killing his best friend with a gun he thought to be empty.

Personal Jesus by Depeche Mode

The song was inspired by the book called Elvis and Me written by Priscilla Presley. It was Depeche Mode first hit from the album Violator, being No. 28 on the Billboard Hot 100.
