Quinceañera, also called Fiesta Quinceañera or simply quinces, is the celebration of a girl’s fifteenth birthday in Latin American communities. For a Mexican girl, this birthday marks the transition from childhood womanhood. The girl is presented like a princess, wearing a nice long dress and her 1st pair of high heel shoes. She also wears a crown of jewels, a necklace with the Virgin Mary, a doll and a bouquet of flowers, symbols of her becoming a woman.
Usually, a Quinceañera consists of several parts. It begins with the formal entry of the girl in the room where guests have been waiting. Speaking about music, this part is usually accompanied by slow songs.
The toast may be optional depending on the area and may be spontaneous, without previous preparations. This is the touching of the glasses and a short speech by the parents to celebrate the girl. The waltz with the chambelanes consists of several chambelanes dancing with the birthday girl during this first dance of the celebration. A Mexican girl can’t dance in public until she is fifteen excepting school dances or family events.
The Quinceañera may also incorporate the ceremony of the 15 candles. During this ceremony the celebrated girl gives fifteen candles to people who she considers the most important in her development over the years. The ceremony of the 15 candles may be accompanied by a speech dedicated to each of the people receiving the candles. This ceremony is also called the Tree of Life. Each candle is the symbol of a special memory shared with any person receiving it.
