When a Chicano girl turns 15, this is a huge event for the entire family, involving a big celebration, accompanied by a church ceremony, a dinner and a dance. Quinceañera, also called Fiesta Quinceañera or simply quinces, is the celebration of a girl’s fifteenth birthday in Latin American communities. The family waltz involves just the relatives and closest friends of the birthday girl. After this, comes the general waltz where everyone is invited on the dance floor to a musical waltz tune. During the celebration, the birthday girl may play a modern song, one of her favorite songs.

The Quinceañera may also incorporate the ceremony of the 15 candles. During this ceremony the celebrated girl gives fifteen candles to people who she considers the most important in her development over the years. The ceremony of the 15 candles may be accompanied by a speech dedicated to each of the people receiving the candles. This ceremony is also called the Tree of Life. Each candle is the symbol of a special memory shared with any person receiving it.
