The Wedding Song, a timeless favorite

The wedding music must be chosen with patience and care because it is the element that has a great impact on setting the mood of the entire event. It is recommended for the couples to choose music that represents their personality and feelings.

If you don’t have a favorite song like other couples and no other idea about what to play for your first wedding dance, you may choose a famous classic called The Wedding Song also known as There Is Love.

The Wedding Song was written and released in 1971 by Paul Stookey, a member of the famous music trio Peter, Paul and Mary. When he wrote this song, Paul Stookey meant it to be a personal and original wedding present to a couple for their wedding. He had many requests, but initially refused to release the song because “It’s was their song.”

His colleague from the trio, Peter and Mary Beth, finally convinced him to record The Wedding Song under the conditions that the royalties go into a fund meant to help struggling musicians. Since its release in 1971, the single has generated over $2 million dollars for the fund.

The song was included on Paul Stookey’s first solo album called Paul and…, released in 1971, achieving a moderate success. The song was meant as a celebration of the love felt by the newlyweds on their big day and the joy of knowing that God witnessed their union and is present in their new formed family.

The Wedding Song (There Is Love) became a radio favorite and a wedding standard. Since its release it has been covered by many other artists till present. If you surf the Internet you’ll find several versions of the song. One of the most notable is a piano version by Mike Strickland.

The lyrics of the song had a huge contribution to the popularity of the song. They tell about the unity of a man and woman and are as follows:

He is now to be among you at the calling of your hearts/ Rest assured this troubadour is acting on His part/ The union of your spirits, here, has caused Him to remain/ For whenever two or more of you are gathered in His name/ There is Love, there is Love/ Well, a man shall leave his mother and a woman leave her home/ And they shall travel on to where the two shall be as one/ As it was in the beginning is now and til the end/ Woman draws her life from man and gives it back again/ Well then what’s to be the reason for becoming man and wife?/ Is it love that brings you here or love that brings you life?/ And if loving is the answer, then who’s the giving for?/ Do you believe in something that you’ve never seen before?/ Oh there is Love, there is Love.”
For good reason, The Wedding Song has remained popular over the years. The beautiful lyrics and sound will create the perfect wedding mood.
