Unity Candle Ceremony Songs

The unity candle ceremony symbolizes the vow of unity between the bride and groom to be and the merging of their families. The ceremony occurs after the ring exchange and before the young couple is pronounced husband and wife. The unity candle has unclear origins. Some writers say it might go back to 1930s. According to tradition, there are three white candles in a line. Two are for the representatives of the bride and groom and the middle one is for the newlyweds.

First, the mothers each light the two side candles. Each candle symbolizes the love of the two families for the bride and the groom. Then, the bride and groom take each other one of the side candles and simultaneously light the middle candle. This shows that the love of the two families is brought together in one love for the new couple. The bride and groom may take a few minutes up to exchange some words to one another and to their families.

After their pronunciation as husband and wife, they blow out the side candles and keep only the middle one lighting. This means the extinguishing of their two single lives, the beginning of a new life as husband and wife and the union of their families into one bigger family. The unity candle may be personalized with the names or the picture of the couple.

Nowadays, many couples may keep all candles burning to show that their unity in marriage doesn’t mean that their individualness is completely extinguished. Usually, the unity candle is lighted at every anniversary of the couple to bring luck.

If you want to include a unity candle ceremony in your wedding ceremony, you need some appropriate music for such a solemn moment to create the necessary mood.
